While we were taking a break from school this summer, I decided to spend as much time reading as I could. Once school starts my free time decreases substantially, so I took every moment possible to sit outside and read while my kids played. And I read some really good books! In case any of you are also book lovers, let me share with you my thoughts on what I read.

This one isn't for the faint at heart. It was truly an unforgettable account of the author's childhood and entrance into adulthood. The events that happened in her life are ones that stick in your mind for weeks, months, maybe even years. A story of overcoming that I couldn't put down.

The Woman in Cabin 10 :: by Ruth Ware

I really love a good thriller! And I've read a ton of them. However this was not my favorite. I had heard so many good things about it and I wanted to like it, but it took me nearly two thirds of the book before I felt like I couldn't stop until I knew the truth. A few years ago I made the decision to never stick with a book I'm not enjoying just because I'd started it. In this stage of life my moments to read are few and far between and I'm not going to waste them on books that I don't love. I nearly gave up on this one several times. In the end I'm glad I didn't give up, mostly because I got to see how it wrapped up.

I love Sarah Mackenzie! She gives amazing book suggestions, and is a total inspiration! For anyone starting out in homeschooling, this is a great read that instills confidence in whichever method of schooling you choose. Prepare to be encouraged!

Hillbilly Elegy :: by J.D. Vance

This memoir was eye opening. A picture of both the strengths and collapse of the white working class. The author presents his story and family history in a way that really makes you think about why it is so difficult for someone who grew up in such brokenness to be able to succeed. It was inspiring and powerful and a book I think anyone would benefit from reading.

Firefly Lane :: by Kristin Hannah

A great read about a friendship that truly stands the test of time. While it's not what I always pick up to read, I found it super enjoyable and I read it much quicker than I originally thought I would. If you love books about love and loss and the power of friendship, pick this one up to read...and then pass it along to your best friend.

The Wife Between Us :: by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

Another in the thriller genre, and this one I really enjoyed! I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say it reminded me very much of Gone Girl, another one of my favorites. If you like this genre, you'll want to add it to your reading list!

Educated :: by Tara Westover

This one was by far the best book I've read this summer. It was powerful. The author is living proof that some people, no matter what their circumstances in life, are unstoppable. A story of a woman with everything against her, and yet rises to the top. This one is a drop-everything-you-are-doing read. You won't regret it!

Clearly I've had a thing for memoirs! As the summer comes to a close I have a whole new reading list that I want to tackle. I imagine I won't get quite as much read as I did in these last three months, but it's been good for me to not turn to binge watching a Netflix series for the thousandth time (ahem, Gilmore Girls). But don't worry, I still like a good show to watch so if you have any suggestions, throw them my way! Happy reading!
