We continued second semester with reading aloud and found even more fun stories to share with you! We do most of our chapter book read alouds during breakfast and sometimes lunch if the girls are asking for it. I find that if they are occupied by a meal, they listen a little more attentively. If you are looking for tips to starting reading aloud with your kids, check out my post here!

Here's what we read in our second semester of school. I've added the links to purchase for reference, and my own personal age recommendations, however my 4 year old has happily sat and listened to all of the following books.

Age recommendation: 5+

We have been continuing through this series and the girls are still really loving it. They are continually amazed by the way life was then.

Age recommendation: 5+

The fifth book in this lovely series and every bit as good as the first four!

Age recommendation: P-2

This is the second book in the My Father's Dragon trilogy by Ruth Stiles Gannett. Lots of fun and creative adventure and imagination packed into this short little read!

Age recommendation: P-2

The third and final installment in the trilogy and just as amazing as the other two! We read this right after the second at my girls request. These three books are great intros into reading chapter books aloud!

Age recommendation: K-2

This is such a fun fairy tale by the amazing Dick King-Smith! Another short read but full of adventure and childhood mystery. One of my all time favorites!

Age recommendation: K-4

We absolutely LOVED the first book in this charming series and my girls really liked this one too. This one is full of both story and adventure and it kept them super interested all the way through!

Age recommendation: K-4

I had been hesitant to try this one only because the movie scared me as a child for quite some time. However I had read somewhere that reading the book aloud isn't the same, so I thought I would give it a try, and I'm so glad I did! It was a super fun read! The illustrated version we have is no longer in print, but this one looks amazing!

Age recommendation: P-2

This is one I remember seeing at the library when I was a kid, but never read it! It was a charming story and one I'm glad we picked up to read.

Age recommendation: 5+

Be still my heart with this one. If I'm being honest, I picked this one up to read aloud more for me than my kids. And it was oh so good! My 4 year old was definitely too young for it, but only in tracking and comprehension. My kindergartener really enjoyed it, but had times of being restless through it, partially I believe because like the first book in many series, there was a lot of story building going on. There were ideas and vocabulary that definitely needed to be explained, but overall, it was enjoyed for sure and my oldest has asked to start the second one several times. But if you are a parent that loves middle reader books as much as I do, you absolutely will not be disappointed!

Age recommendation: P-2

I couldn't wait to introduce this one to the girls! I loved Beverly Cleary as a kid, and I love her as an adult!

Age recommendation: P-2

This one was an excellent read! It really reads more like several short stories about a little girl in Africa. A great way to introduce a different culture to your kids!

Age recommendation: 5+

This is book one is the Growly series about a young bear's adventures and it was really sweet. This one also had a lot of story building going on, so the kids' interest waned at times, but overall it was a good read and we will definitely finish out the series.

Happy reading!
