The Olympics is here! I've always been a big fan of the Olympics. It's so much fun to watch history being made. Our kids are still young so they don't quite understand the excitement surrounding this event, but you better believe I'm playing it up big anyway. And you know what? They are excited! Because I am excited! We all sat and watched the opening ceremonies together Friday night and got to do all sorts of explaining and question answering. The sound of the crowd as the USA entered the arena...be still my heart. So much to be proud of!

I know I haven't had the experience of walking through the Olympics while homeschooling yet, but I thought I would throw out there what I am using the next couple of weeks to make the event fun and festive in our home in case anyone else is interested. It's not too late!

Since my kids are still quite little I realized they had no concept as to what the Olympic games were, so I decided to begin prior to the start of the games with some of our favorites...Jack & Annie.

The Magic Treehouse series follows brother and sister, Jack & Annie, as they go back in time through many adventures, and it has been one of our favorites for the last couple of years now. It's a huge series and a great intro to read alouds. Hour of the Olympics was a great introduction to where the Olympic games originated. I also gathered bits and pieces from their non-fiction companion to this book. If you have young ones that are just getting started with chapter books, pick these up. You won't be sorry!

I purchased this 2018 Winter Games guide off of Amazon.

It was a pretty inexpensive book that would be much more interactive for older kids, as there is a cool medal tracker in the back and bios on lots of the athletes. The girls have had fun looking through it though and using it as a way to learn more about the sports. Did you know there is an event called the Biathlon? You ski down a mountain with a gun on your back, stop and shoot at targets and then hop back on your skis to the finish line. So crazy!

I printed and hung up this awesome 100 country flag bunting and it made our school area so festive! Did I mention it's FREE?!

This new game, Flag Frenzy, has been so much fun and has been a great introduction to the flags of each country. We've played it a ton already, and you guys I don't even hate it.

I'll also add a few links at the end to some printable resources I plan on using to help continue Olympic interest throughout the next couple of weeks. Lastly, if you're crazy enough to not be excited about the winter Olympics, Bend's very own Ben Ferguson is competing this year in snowboarding! Now let's get to watching! Team USA!
