We just finished out our first full week of homeschooling and while I'm impressed with how well the girls have adjusted to the changes during our day, it wasn't without its hiccups. We had a short bout of a stomach bug to start our week off. You guys I was so discouraged because it's barely Fall and this stuff is already making its rounds. And our youngest is smack dab in the middle of a wonder week. **Side note: If you haven't heard about wonder weeks yet, please, please, please look into them. They will save your sanity. All three of our kids have followed them almost exactly to the week and knowing they are moving through one makes you feel way less crazy.** We had to be flexible with our week and I was so thankful we had the ability to be so.

We spent a lot of time learning about plants and trees, flowers and leaves, what it means to be kind, handwriting, math and we read through the first half of Little House in the Big Woods. Did you guys read these as kids? Oh my goodness I loved them then, and I think I adore them even more now.

We ended our week reading the book, "How to Make An Apple Pie and See the World," by Marjorie Priceman.

I bring this book out at the start of every Fall and both my girls love it. The illustrations are so lovely. There are all sorts of learning lessons hidden in this book. In the past I have had the girls help me make an apple pie, but I've been really trying to give them some independence in the kitchen so I wanted to give them something to do that wasn't too hard and I knew they would find success in. So I got out my mom's tried and true apple crisp recipe and just sat back and watched and answered questions as they figured out how to make it. It was so fun to watch!

I had Hattie gather all of the ingredients from the pantry and refrigerator and cut all of the apples. Ivy found all of the measuring cups she needed and measured out all of the ingredients for the crumb topping.

I guided them through the recipe but made sure to keep my hands out of it. When they finished they were so proud of themselves! Apple season is one of my very favorites, and so far this one has been no exception.

Apple Crisp

3 apples (peeled and cut as you would for pie)

1 cup flour

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup butter

Cinnamon

1. Arrange apples in the bottom of a square baking dish.

2. Mix together flour and sugar and cut butter into it until it resembles smalls crumbs.

3. Cover apples with the crumb topping and sprinkle cinnamon over the top.

4. Bake at 375 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown and apples are tender.
